Water Heater Service Before Winter in Battle Creek and the Surrounding Areas

In winter the water coming into your home is much colder, so your water heater works harder for every shower. Sediment, a worn part or a tank that is too small shows up first on cold mornings. A.W. Crooks Plumbing, Heating and Cooling checks, flushes, repairs and replaces water heaters, and has since 1912.

Quick Check This Fall

  1. Look at the floor around the tank for water or rust.
  2. Listen for popping or rumbling when it heats.
  3. Find the cold water shutoff on top of the tank so you know where it is.
  4. If water is pooling at the base, shut the cold inlet if you can reach it safely and call us.

No Hot Water Tonight

Cold showers are not a plan. If your tank ran out of hot water, the pilot will not stay lit, or an electric element failed, call us. We handle no-hot-water emergencies for your home nights and weekends from our Battle Creek shop.

Before you call: check the breaker or gas shutoff, and look at the floor under the tank. If you see water at the base, shut the cold supply valve on top of the heater if you can reach it safely, then call: a leak at the base can flood a basement fast.

Leak at the Base / Flood Risk

Water on the floor around your heater is an emergency. Tanks rust from the inside; when the bottom goes, the whole tank dumps. Shut the cold inlet if you can, move anything you do not want soaked, and call us. Same-day replace when it matters: we do not leave your home without a plan for hot water.

Water Heater Leak or No Hot Water: Steps for Your Home

When your tank is leaking or you have no hot water on a cold Michigan night, these steps protect your floor and buy time until we arrive.

  1. Shut off the cold water: Close the cold-water supply valve on top of the heater (usually a handle on the pipe feeding the tank). That stops new water from flooding your home.
  2. Kill power or gas: Electric: flip the water-heater breaker off. Gas: turn the gas control to OFF (or the valve on the gas line). Do not relight a pilot if you smell gas: leave and call the utility / 911.
  3. Open a hot faucet: Open a nearby hot tap to relieve pressure so the tank can drain a little and stop pushing water out a leak.
  4. Contain the water: Put a pan or towels under the leak. Move boxes and anything you do not want soaked. If water is near outlets, stay clear and call us.
  5. Call A.W. Crooks: (269) 962-5441, 24/7. We diagnose repair vs replace in your home and get hot water back. Same crew that handles furnace no-heat calls in winter.

Symptoms we see most: no hot water at all, lukewarm only, water at the base of the tank, rusty water, popping/rumbling (sediment), pilot that will not stay lit, or an electric heater that trips the breaker. Each points to a different fix: thermocouple, element, thermostat, T&P valve, anode, or a tank that is done. We explain the process and the price before we start.

Questions We Get on Water Heater Repair and Installation Calls

How Fast Can You Get Here for No Hot Water?

24/7 for no-hot-water and leaks. Same number nights and weekends. We come to your home in Battle Creek and the surrounding areas.

Is the Pilot Out or Is the Element Dead?

Gas tanks often lose the pilot or a thermocouple. Electric tanks often lose an element or thermostat. We diagnose on site and tell you repair vs replace before we start.

Repair or Replace?

We diagnose in your home and explain repair vs replace and the price before we start.

Same-Day Water Heater Replace: When Is It Possible?

When the tank is leaking, past its years, or repair will not restore safe hot water, we often replace the same day for homes in Battle Creek and the surrounding areas, stock, venting, and gas/electric check permitting.

Tank, Tankless or Navien: Which Fits Your Home?

Tank is straightforward and familiar. Tankless and Navien save space and can cut standby loss, but need the right gas line, venting, and water quality. We measure your home and explain tank, tankless, and Navien options and the price before you choose.

How Long Does a Typical Install Take?

Most standard tank swaps finish in a few hours once we are on site: measure, shut down, swap, fill, fire, and clean up. Tankless or Navien can take longer for venting and gas upsizing.

Do You Haul Away the Old Tank?

Yes. Old tank removal and haul-away are part of a normal install so you are not left with a wet rusted unit in the garage.

What Does the $99 Water Heater Check Cover?

One check to catch leaks, sediment, and failing parts early. Repairs are not included. See Water Heater Check for the current $99 offer.

Do You Come on Weekends?

Yes. No hot water does not wait for Monday. Call us nights and weekends.

Why Does My Hot Water Run Out Faster in Winter?

The water coming in is colder, so the heater has to work harder. Sediment, a failing part or an undersized tank make it worse.

Should I Flush My Water Heater Before Winter?

Flushing clears sediment that makes the tank work harder. We can flush and check it for you.

Is a New Water Heater Covered After Install?

Yes. Install Care gives every water heater we install a free yearly inspection for the life of the unit: we flush it and check for leaks.
